International dimension: Russia's 3D-printed missiles

New York's 3D printer blocking law and industry response

The battle over 3D-printed firearms is moving from fringe hobbyist forums into state legislatures, courtrooms, and international conflict zones. California became the second state to require firearm-blocking technology in 3D printers, following New York, but the mandate only triggers once ASTM International publishes a standard, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation has already said there is no world where the mandated technology actually works as intended. Colorado, Washington, Maine, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia all enacted laws this year tightening rules around 3D-printed guns and unserialized firearms, and at least 16 states now have ghost gun regulations with eight states plus the District of Columbia specifically outlawing 3D-printed guns.

The technical challenge is that the same manufacturing tools the laws target have peaceful uses that the blocking technology cannot distinguish from weapon parts. A CAD file modified slightly in size or split into pieces defeats database matching. A trained AI model that flags barrel-shaped parts throws false positives on brackets, levers, tubes, and other legitimate components. Meanwhile, Russia has deployed 3D-printed cruise missiles, and a gun-rights activist unveiled what he calls the world's first "AI-made" 3D-printed firearm, a .22 caliber handgun created by an AI system called GatGPT that can allegedly generate gun designs.
