Other major incidents and vulnerabilities

October 2026 is being called "Black October" in cybersecurity circles for good reason. The week saw a concentration of high-profile incidents that add up to a watershed moment: the software supply chain, the AI tooling stack, and the cryptographic foundations of the internet all came under simultaneous attack. A compromised LiteLLM release hit PyPI and Docker Hub with credential-stealing malware that executed on install, period, with no need for the application to import the library. Microsoft attributed a ConnectWise Cloud Backup supply-chain compromise that hit more than 2,250 tenants to Storm-0940, a China-state aligned actor that weaponized an open-source AI penetration testing framework called ARTEX to automate reconnaissance and password spraying at machine speed. An eMudhra certificate authority had eight intermediate CA private keys that were tiny integers, one literally the number 4, allowing anyone to forge trusted certificates, exposed for roughly 17 months.

These are not vendor roundup stories. They are first-party advisories from CISA, Microsoft, and the companies themselves. CISA issued a joint #StopRansomware advisory with the FBI, US Secret Service, and international partners on SafePay ransomware, which has hit more than 600 critical infrastructure organizations since August 2024. CISA added two critical PHP remote code execution flaws to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog with an October 29 federal patching deadline. CISA also confirmed active exploitation of four Plex Media Server vulnerabilities. The Java emergency update for CVE-2026-91403 carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.1 and affects how Java applications trust digital certificates.
