Starlink, Musk, and the wider war context

UN war crimes report and deep strikes inside Russia

The Oleshky ceasefire is the first localized truce on any front line since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. It was brokered by Melania Trump, confirmed by both Moscow and Kyiv, and took effect at 3 a.m. on October 27. About 2,000 people remain trapped in the Russian-occupied city . running out of food, medicine, and clean water, eating garden weeds to survive. The truce is supposed to let humanitarian aid in and allow civilians to evacuate to either Russia or Ukraine by November 1. But it's a one-city pause, not a peace deal. Overnight Russian strikes again hit Kyiv, underscoring how limited the pause remains.

The bigger picture is grim. Russia attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles and 280 drones on October 27. Ukraine's air defense is destroying almost 60% of Russian Geran-4 decoy drones, according to the General Staff. Russian strikes hit Kyiv's South Bridge and a university, killing one person and injuring 10. Russia attacked one of Kyiv's key bridges. Putin told European leaders that Russia does not intend to abandon its aim to capture the entire Donbas. Zelenskyy revealed over 15 kilometers of underground advance in Operation Veles near Kupiansk . a significant Ukrainian incursion still unfolding.

The ceasefire in Oleshky is historic because it is the first time either side has agreed to stop firing on a specific town for humanitarian reasons. Whether it holds, whether it becomes a template for other besieged cities, and whether Melania Trump's behind-the-scenes diplomacy can open broader negotiations . these are the questions that matter going forward. The White House says she served as the "Exclusive Intermediary." The Kremlin spokesman publicly welcomed her role. Ukrainian officials confirmed the agreement. But both sides also say the wider war continues.
