Key findings
UN biodiversity crisis, COP17 in Yerevan
- UN News (October 16, 2026): UN Secretary-General Guterres issued an urgent appeal for governments, businesses, and communities to accelerate efforts to protect biodiversity. "Climate chaos, invasive species, overgrazing and overfishing, excessive fertilizers, pesticides, plastics and heavy metals, all these and more are driving the triple planetary crisis of pollution, biodiversity loss and climate chaos." He warned that "progress is uneven and far too slow" and countries risk falling "well short" of the goal of conserving 30% of the world's land and sea by 2030. The UN biodiversity conference (CBD COP17) opens next week in Yerevan, Armenia, with more than 1 million species facing extinction risk and conservation action described as "extremely slow" with severely inadequate funding. Fewer than half of national targets set to protect the world's plants, animals, and ecosystems are on track, the UN warns in a new report. (Source)
Global multidimensional poverty rises for first time since 2010
- UN News / UNDP (October 16, 2026): The UNDP's 2026 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index Update Report found that 1.2 billion people worldwide are living in multidimensional poverty, an increase of 51.5 million since the last report. This is the first rise in the index since it was established in 2010. The UN's 2026 World Social Report, released October 15, found that AI, digital technology, and the renewable energy transition are reshaping the global economy, but these changes are likely to widen social gaps rather than close them.
