Unit 8200, Cyber Operations & AI Targeting
- Powerbase (2026): Unit 8200, the IDF's signal intelligence arm comparable to the NSA, has been linked to the Stuxnet, Flame, and Duqu cyber-attacks and the 2024 Lebanon pager attacks. Its commander, Brig. Gen. Yossi Sariel, resigned in 2024 saying 'I did not fulfill my mission' over the failure to anticipate the October 7 attack. A joint investigation by The Guardian, +972 Magazine, and Local Call found Unit 8200 used a customized Microsoft Azure cloud platform to store audio files of millions of phone calls made by Palestinians, Microsoft later found evidence supporting elements of the reporting and 'ceased and disabled' specified subscriptions. - Powerbase (2026): The Israeli army makes extensive use of AI targeting systems: Habsora ('The Gospel'), which can generate targets almost automatically, described by a former intelligence officer as a 'mass assassination factory'; Lavender, which at one stage early in the war listed as many as 37,000 Palestinian men as linked to Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad; and a tracking system called 'Where's Daddy?' used to signal when targeted individuals entered their family homes.
