October 2026 is the month the Israel wars entered a new documentation phase. The NAZA documentary (directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Shor, produced by The Guardian, and winner of the special jury prize at the Venice International Film Festival) presents testimony from 24 anonymous Israeli military and intelligence personnel alleging that AI-assisted targeting systems played a central role in the bombing of Gaza and that the military knowingly accepted large numbers of civilian casualties. One of the film's most striking reported allegations is that an IDF attack was approved in which as many as 500 civilians could be killed to eliminate a single Hamas target. The IDF has rejected the portrayal, calling that specific claim "completely false," and Netanyahu has called for an investigation into the soldiers and officers who spoke anonymously, urging the attorney general, military chief of staff, and head of Shin Bet to launch a comprehensive investigation into those involved for alleged security and defamation offences.

The throughline is the collision between Israel's military self-conception and the documentation emerging from within its own ranks. Unit 8200 (the IDF's signal intelligence arm, comparable in function to the NSA), has been linked to the Stuxnet, Flame, and Duqu cyber-attacks, the 2007 strike on the Syrian reactor at al-Kibar, and the 2024 pager attacks in Lebanon. Since 2014 it has faced growing criticism over mass surveillance of Palestinians and its role in AI-assisted targeting in Gaza. A joint investigation by The Guardian, +972 Magazine, and Local Call reported in August 2025 that Unit 8200 had used a customized area of Microsoft's Azure cloud platform to store audio files of millions of phone calls made by Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, a trove used to plan airstrikes and as a basis for arrests in the West Bank. Microsoft said it was unaware its products had been used for surveillance of civilians, opened a review, and in September 2025 announced it had found evidence supporting elements of the reporting and had "ceased and disabled" specified subscriptions and services of a unit within the Israel Ministry of Defense.

What to watch next: the October 27 Israeli election, Netanyahu's fate and the direction of the next government will shape the trajectory of operations in Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank. The BBC Verify investigation identifying 254 incidents in which the IDF has been accused of killing or injuring people that it said it was investigating but have had no public outcome is a live accountability story. The ongoing Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon and the southern suburb of Beirut, combined with the settler violence against Palestinian olive harvesters in the West Bank (five killed and more than 100 injured in one week), make the ground situation across all three fronts a daily story.
