The NAZA documentary: Israeli soldiers on Gaza targeting decisions

Israel's operational footprint: strikes in Lebanon, cyber, and the settlement-accelerated West Bank

The Israel story in October 2026 is the story of a war that officially ended a year ago but never actually stopped (and is now producing body counts that are creeping back toward wartime levels despite the October 2025 ceasefire. Since the ceasefire was announced, Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,460 Palestinians in Gaza, according to Gaza's health ministry, bringing total casualties since the truce to 1,493 fatalities and 5,299 injuries as of mid-October. More than 340 children have been killed in Gaza despite the ceasefire agreement, UNICEF reported. Nearly all of Gaza's 2.1 million people still need shelter assistance as winter sets in, with current supplies meeting only about 17% of needs, and aid into Gaza remains held back by underfunding and Israeli restrictions) including limited access to more than 64% of Gaza's land.

The throughline that connects Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon is the gap between the diplomatic framework (ceasefires, truces, disarmament talks) and the operational reality on the ground (near-daily strikes, settler violence during the olive harvest, Israeli troops remaining in southern Lebanon despite US-mediated withdrawal talks, Hezbollah refusing to disarm, Israel continuing strikes in southern Lebanon). The West Bank has become a second active front: five Palestinians were killed and over 240 injured by Israeli forces or settlers over the past two weeks alone, with 200 olive harvest-related settler attacks documented since the start of September. Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farmers harvesting olives in at least eight villages in the northern West Bank, where most olive groves are concentrated and tens of thousands of Palestinian families depend on them for income. A Washington Post photographer, Heidi Levine, was undergoing surgery on her finger after being beaten by settlers in the West Bank.

The NAZA documentary (released in October 2026 by Israeli director Yuval Abraham and Rachel Soar), is the most significant Israeli domestic intervention in the war narrative this period, pulling together interviews with 24 Israeli intelligence personnel and soldiers who described the orders they received and the strikes they carried out. The film's central claim is that civilian deaths in Gaza were not simply an unfortunate consequence of war but "an accepted and sometimes deliberate part" of the system, a claim the IDF has not addressed directly. The film is named after the Hebrew military term "Nezek Agav" (NAZA), meaning collateral damage, referring to the estimated number of civilians who may be killed in a particular strike.

What to watch next: whether the Israeli election (the first general election since the October 7, 2023 attacks, with voters deciding whether Benjamin Netanyahu stays prime minister or Gadi Eisenkot takes the lead) produces a government willing to change the operational posture in Gaza and the West Bank, whether the evacuation of certain unauthorized West Bank settlements ordered by Netanyahu under US pressure actually happens, and whether the Security Council's October 15 open debate on the Occupied Palestinian Territory produces any meaningful pressure.
