Israel's October 27 election

The Israeli military's response to the October 24 West Bank attack that killed two Israeli soldiers is a case study in how the occupation manufactures its own escalation cycles. Two Palestinian gunmen shot and killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others at a checkpoint near Hebron; Israel responded by announcing a full closure of the West Bank, ordering the military to prepare for what Prime Minister Netanyahu called an operation "on a scale not seen since Israel first occupied the West Bank in 1967," and beginning to demolish infrastructure that poses a "threat" while restricting all residents in the Hebron area to leave through only three designated exit points after security screening. The Israeli prime minister's office ordered the army to accelerate illegal settlements the same week. This is not a measured response to a specific attack -- it is an opportunity to tighten the occupation's grip. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs documented that more than 1,600 Israeli settler attacks were recorded in the West Bank this year as of mid-September, over 4,300 Palestinians have been displaced, and 200 olive harvest-related settler attacks have been documented since the start of September alone. Five Palestinians were killed and over 240 injured by Israeli forces or settlers in the occupied West Bank over the two weeks before October 20. The olive harvest is the annual economic lifeline for tens of thousands of Palestinian families in the northern West Bank, and the settler violence targeting it is systematic, not incidental.

The Gaza picture is equally stark. More than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the October 2025 Hamas-Israel ceasefire agreement that ended two years of war, according to the UN. Israeli strikes continued in Gaza throughout the week of October 24 despite the ceasefire -- strikes that killed Palestinians including children, according to local health officials. The BBC Verify investigation published October 15 identified 254 incidents in which the Israeli military has been accused of killing or injuring people in Gaza, Lebanon, the occupied West Bank, and Israel that it said it was investigating but have produced no public outcome -- 158 in Gaza, 48 in the West Bank, 32 in Lebanon, and 16 in Israel or in IDF detention; at least one person was reportedly killed in more than 200 of them. The IDF has acknowledged that 170 Palestinians in Gaza who were identified as journalists following their deaths were actually members of terror groups -- a claim that carries its own burden of proof. What to watch next: the October 27 Israeli election, which will shape the next phase of the occupation; the number of investigations that actually produce public outcomes after the BBC Verify report; and whether the West Bank closure that Netanyahu ordered after the Hebron attack becomes permanent or is walked back.
