UN report: Israeli crimes against humanity, genocide continues

Iran, Hezbollah, and the regional context

Israel voted on October 27 in its first election since the October 7, 2023 attacks, and the result was a deadlock. Exit polls by major Israeli television networks showed neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc nor his main rival Gadi Eisenkot's bloc securing the 61 seats needed for a parliamentary majority. Netanyahu's bloc won 50 seats, the opposition won 52-53, and Arab-led parties won 17-18 . a strong showing that could let them decide the next prime minister, though both blocs have refused to partner with them. Voter turnout hit 31.5% by noon, the highest at that hour since 1973. The election is the most important in years, and the outcome will shape Israel's course on Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, and the West Bank for the next government's term.

The election took place while Israeli forces continued operations on multiple fronts. The IDF sealed off all entry points to Ramallah in the occupied West Bank during the election, citing security. Israeli ground and air operations in Khan Younis killed at least 51 people, including women and children, according to Palestinian medical officials. Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,000 people in Lebanon over the past two weeks, nearly a quarter of them women and children, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. And the IDF continued destroying terrorist infrastructure sites in southern Lebanon's security zone . more than 540 sites destroyed in recent weeks.

On the legal front, a UN-mandated commission of inquiry issued a 19-page report on October 26 finding that Israel committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied Palestinian territories . including extermination, persecution, torture, rape, and other forms of sexual violence. The report found that Israeli authorities continue to commit genocidal acts even after the nominal yearlong ceasefire, with the intent to destroy the Palestinian people. More than 21,500 Palestinian children, including over 1,000 infants, have been killed in Gaza over the past three years. The commission also documented that Israeli forces sexually abused Global Sumud Flotilla activists who were seized on the high seas and abducted to Israel.

The throughline is that the election outcome will determine whether Israel continues on its current trajectory . Netanyahu has been engaging with the US administration and Europe, presenting himself as the ideal partner in confronting Iran . or shifts direction under Eisenkot, a former military chief promising accountability for the security failures of October 7. Either way, the war on Gaza, the operations in Lebanon, and the expansion of control in the West Bank are not going to stop.
